Before railways and modern roads connected the Douro Valley to Porto, Port wine barrels traveled down the Douro River aboard a traditional wooden vessel known as the Rabelo boat (Barco Rabelo).
For centuries, these boats carried wine from the vineyards of the Douro Valley to the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wines were aged and exported around the world.
Navigating the Douro River was far from easy. The river was once filled with dangerous currents, narrow canyons, and hidden rocks. The men who operated the Rabelo boats, known as barqueiros, demonstrated extraordinary skill and courage as they guided these fragile vessels through the valley.
Today, the Rabelo boat remains one of the most iconic symbols of Port wine history and Douro Valley culture.

What Is a Rabelo Boat?
The Rabelo boat is a traditional wooden cargo vessel specifically designed to navigate the challenging conditions of the Douro River.
Its main characteristics include:
• flat-bottom hull without a keel
• large square sail
• long wooden steering oar
• length between 19 and 23 meters
Despite their simple appearance, Rabelo boats were capable of transporting 40 to 100 barrels of Port wine, along with a crew of up to 12 men.
These vessels were primarily used between the 18th and 20th centuries, until the construction of modern transportation systems eventually replaced river transport.
The last commercial Rabelo voyage carrying wine barrels took place in 1971.
The Role of Rabelo Boats in the Port Wine Trade
The development of the Port wine trade made the Douro River an essential transport route.
After grapes were harvested and wine produced in the Douro Valley, barrels were loaded onto Rabelo boats and transported downstream to Porto.
This journey connected the vineyards of the valley with the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where Port wine matured before being exported to international markets.
