The Douro Valley, located in northern Portugal, is one of the most remarkable wine regions in the world and the birthplace of Port wine. Recognised as the oldest demarcated wine region, officially regulated in 1756, the Douro is famous for its dramatic terraced vineyards and its long tradition of winemaking.

Beyond its most famous product, Port wine, the Douro also produces a wide range of DOC Douro wines, including elegant reds, fresh whites and aromatic fortified wines such as Moscatel do Douro.

Together, these wines reflect the unique terroir, climate and grape varieties that define the Douro Valley.

Port Wine: The Most Famous Wine of the Douro Valley

Port wine is the Douro’s most famous ambassador and one of Portugal’s most iconic exports.

This fortified wine is produced exclusively in the Douro Demarcated Region. During fermentation, the process is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit, which preserves natural sugars and results in a wine with an alcohol content between 19% and 22%.

This method creates a rich and complex wine that is particularly suited for ageing.

Tradition and Innovation in the Douro Valley

Winemaking in the Douro combines centuries-old traditions with modern techniques.

Many vineyards still preserve old vines, often more than 40 years old, where several grape varieties grow together in the same plot.

These vineyards produce wines of exceptional complexity and depth, reflecting the interaction between grape varieties, soil and climate.

The result is a wine region that successfully balances tradition, innovation and authenticity.
