Braga Romana: Portugal's Most Authentic Roman Festival in Braga
Every May, the city of Braga steps back more than two thousand years. Streets that today carry cafés and modern life fill with legionaries, market traders, musicians, and ritual processions. For five days, Braga becomes Bracara Augusta, the Roman city founded by Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BC.
Braga Romana is one of the most important historical festivals in Portugal and one of the most authentic Roman festivals in Europe. What makes it stand out is not just its scale, but its authenticity: this is not a performance designed for tourists, but a celebration built by the city itself.

What is Braga Romana?
Founded in the 1st century BC, Bracara Augusta was one of the most important Roman cities in the Iberian Peninsula, a centre of administration, trade, and culture connected by an extensive network of Roman roads across the Iberian Peninsula.
Today, traces of that past still exist beneath Braga's streets. Braga Romana brings this history back to life through a large-scale festival spread across the historic centre.
Visitors can experience:
• Roman markets and street food
• Gladiator battles and military demonstrations
• Civic and religious reenactments
• Workshops and educational activities
• Nighttime parades and performances
Unlike many historical festivals, Braga Romana is deeply rooted in the local community, with schools, associations, and thousands of participants actively involved in recreating daily life from the past.
Braga Romana 2026 - XXII Edition
The 2026 edition takes place from May 20 to May 24 and marks the beginning of a new four-year thematic cycle.
This year focuses on the Bracari, the indigenous communities who lived in the region before Roman occupation. For the first time, the festival expands beyond Roman history to explore the deeper origins of Braga's identity.
Across five days, the programme includes more than 400 initiatives, making it one of the most ambitious editions to date.
Key highlights of Braga Romana 2026
• Opening Ceremony (Ludi Florei). A symbolic start inspired by Roman celebrations dedicated to the goddess Flora.
• Circus Maximus. One of the festival's most popular attractions, featuring gladiator battles, chariot races, and equestrian performances.
• Roman Market (Mercatus Romanus). A vibrant marketplace with food, crafts, jewellery, and products inspired by Roman and pre-Roman traditions.
• Historical Reenactments. Rituals, military demonstrations, and daily life scenes recreated throughout the city, with new focus on pre-Roman Bracari culture.
• Bracara Augusta Triumphalis. A large-scale nighttime parade through Braga's historic centre, bringing together hundreds of costumed participants.
• Workshops & Interactive Experiences. Hands-on activities including mosaic making, pottery, Roman games, and traditional crafts linked to early Iberian cultures.
